Hoy hemos tenido la presentación oficial de la 5ª edición del festival MDD y aquí os dejamos toda la info sobre lo que aconteció en el hotel Melia Palma Marina.
This design biennial will take place in the cities of Palma and Inca from March 18 to 21, 2025 with a program full of conferences, fashion shows, round tables, product exhibitions and new initiatives that will be unveiled as the festival approaches.
Under the theme “Craft Intelligence”, MDD presents the bases of the three competitions that award national prizes in the categories of Fashion, Interior Design and Landscaping, the latter being one of the great novelties this year. The aim is to reward and recognize emerging talent in different creative disciplines, both nationally and Balearic.
Palma, November 28th, 2024 – The 5th edition of Mallorca Design Day (MDD), the only design festival in Spain that rewards and gives maximum visibility to new talents in various creative disciplines, was presented this morning at a press conference. MDD will be held from March 18 to 21, 2025 in the cities of Palma and Inca, culminating with the grand final gala on March 21 at the century-old Fàbrica Ramis in Inca.
This Biennial of design is consolidated as a reference event both nationally and internationally, staying true to its purpose since its inception: to promote design in various disciplines, promoting innovation, creativity and sustainability.
The press conference took place at the Meliá Palma Marina Hotel (Palma de Mallorca), with the presence of Raquel Arañón, founder and director of MDD; Virgilio Moreno, mayor of the city of Inca; Juan Mellen, president of the Design Institute of Spain (D!OS); and Lourdes Vázquez, director of Jardins de Tramuntana.
Theme and image of the 5th edition of MDD
The new paradigm “Craft Intelligence” becomes the theme of this Biennial, highlighting the need and importance of respecting tradition, craftsmanship, materials and attention to detail. This proposal invites to explore and evolve all this inherited mastery through the use of new tools and knowledge offered by technology and artificial intelligence.
As stated by Raquel Arañón, founder and director of MDD: “Our goal is to create a synergy between human creativity and the possibilities offered by AI, placing value on creative expression and the role of the handmade. As a designer and craftswoman, I am convinced that technological advances and artificial intelligence can bring enormous benefits to handmade work: from new creative opportunities and the development of both manual and intellectual skills, to greater efficiency and time optimization. And under this vision is drawn the challenge we launch with each of our three National Awards to emerging designers in the disciplines of Fashion, Interior Design and Landscape Architecture. Their innovative visions have to offer us proposals that combine tradition and avant-garde to imagine a future where craftsmanship and artificial intelligence go hand in hand, enhancing all their strengths”.
Bringing to life this fusion between craftsmanship and AI, the organization has presented “Lola”, a virtual assistant who will be the emblematic image of this edition and the main thread of the festival. Lola, created by artificial intelligence, represents a woman of ancestral culture with an identity of her own. Her face is decorated with traditional designs, and she wears accessories and handmade jewelry, all in a palette of blue and black, shades that evoke both the AI and MDD’s corporate image. Lola becomes a symbol, created by the graphic designer and creator of the festival’s graphic image, Jerónimo Sánchez.
National Awards of the 5th edition of MDD
Under the theme “Craft Intelligence”, MDD launches its three national competitions in the disciplines of Fashion, Interior Design and Landscaping, the latter as a great novelty this year. The aim of these awards is to discover, promote and reward emerging talent in these fields, both nationally and in the Balearic Islands. In the words of Lourdes Vázquez, director of Jardins de Tramuntana, the company sponsoring the new Landscaping Award, “Landscaping connects creativity with nature, respecting the environment and fusing tradition and innovation. We share these principles and values with MDD and, therefore, we are happy to be part of this initiative”.
The three competitions include cash prizes in the national category, open to any resident in Spain, and specific accésit prizes for Balearic projects in the Fashion and Landscaping categories. The three Balearic Fashion accésit will also have the opportunity to execute their collection for the catwalk of the grand final gala, which will take place on March 21 at the century-old Fabrica Ramis in Inca.
Likewise, and generating synergies with the Balearic fashion sector, as happened in the previous edition of MDD, the winner of the Art Jove fashion award, organized by the Conselleria de Famílies i Afers Socials through the Institut Balear de la Joventut (IBJOVE), will be able to parade on the catwalk of the final gala of MDD.
The legal bases are available on the MDD website and in the coming months the prestigious panel of professionals that will form each jury will be unveiled. Among the main evaluation criteria are the projection of the theme, creativity, innovation, sustainability and the viability of the manufacturing and start-up processes.
From March 18 to 21, 2025: 5th edition of MDD
The 5th edition of the MDD festival already has a date: it will be held from March 18 to 21, 2025, extending its program with an extra day compared to previous editions. This year, the festival promises an agenda full of conferences, fashion shows, round tables, product exhibitions and new initiatives, all focused on the design universe. The final program will be announced in the months leading up to the event. During these days, interior design, architecture, landscaping, fashion and food design will become the main protagonists of the island, with actions that will take place in the cities of Palma and Inca.
Juan Mellen, president of the Design Institute of Spain (D!OS), an organization that promotes and encourages the culture of design and collaborating entity of MDD, has highlighted the consolidation of MDD “as one of the five main design festivals in our country, where the island of Mallorca is positioned as a national and international reference in this sector. Design is one of the strengths of our country and MDD is a perfect platform to show it to the world”.
Virgilio Moreno, Mayor of Inca: “This is the third edition in which Inca supports this festival which is undoubtedly the quintessential design event in Mallorca and helps to export the name of our island to the world. In Inca we have an industrial past, but we have a present and a future very focused on design. It is an honor to continue being part of MDD”.
